BMW x5 copied by a Chinese auto manufacturer 2006
A bold Chinese company Shuanghuan copied
the design of BMW x5 to its SUV. The model is called S-CEO. BMW had sued Shuanghuan
and a court in Munich blocked the importation of imitation. I actually saw one in Beijing. In practice,
the wealthy people in China who want and could afford one would never shame themselves into buying a copy.
Those who buy a copy could not afford a real BMW anyway, and for certain will not be foolish enough to
think that Shuanghuan is actually BMW. In this sense, economic loss for BMW is very unlikely, but it does
cheapen their car's prestige. Though I think it's unlikely many people will be caught driving one in most
